Photography
I have been involved with photography for about 25 years, beginning with Lith printing and moving onto colour and black and white prints produced in a darkroom. Recently, I have begun making Giclée (inkjet) prints as a kind of happy medium between traditional techniques and modern technology.I take my photographs on a variety of medium format and 35mm film cameras and then prepare the scanned negatives for printing on a computer. I find this is the best way to obtain optimum results, mainly resulting from the larger negative size of film cameras, as compared with the small CCDs found in digital cameras; and aided by the greater editing scope possible in Photoshop. In addition, images captured on film can be scanned to produce prints much larger than digital cameras can achieve, without any loss of quality.
All my Giclée prints are made using archival pigment inks which produce vibrant colours with better tonal range than dye based inks, as well as having greater permanence. Final images are printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, an acid free 100% rag paper, widely considered to be the best archival photographic inkjet paper. Prints made in this way are both visually stunning and are expected to last about 100 years without fading, if properly kept (see print care).
